The first such place was undoubtedly in San Francisco. Most writers note 1 agree that the earliest temple was in present-day Chinatown: Both are claimed to have existed since the early s. However, whether one accepts such claims depends on how one understands historical continuity. It is not enough to rely on secondary sources or oral tradition. It is also not enough just to cite primary sources which state that a temple dedicated to the same deity or sponsored by the same organization formerly existed in the same area as the present one, as is the case with both the Tin How and Kong Chow temples.
Native Americans: Histories and Facts
The problem is that the term has been so politicized, and frequently used to attack leaders or countries that one dislikes, that it has come to mean different things to different people. For instance, the term has frequently been used to describe what white settlers did to the Native Americans over the last few centuries, when much of the indigenous population of the United States was wiped out. However, the overwhelming majority of those deaths were due to smallpox being inadvertently introduced into a native population that lacked the biological means to resist it which, while devastating, was not a genocide as it was not done intentionally.

February 20, Dear Cecil: I’ve noticed that the lobbies of many older apartment buildings are adorned with what appear to be numerous swastikas. Were these an Indian symbol or something before Adolf made them famous?
Got it in one, my friend. The swastika was employed by various American Indian tribes, notably the Navajo, for whom it was a sort of good luck sign. I recall once seeing a picture of the young Jackie Kennedy then Bouvier wearing a costume decorated with swastikas for a Native American pageant. Or maybe she was going to become a professional wrestler; my memory is somewhat vague.

By Brother Nathanael Kapner Copyright There are so many unanswered questions regarding the Sandy Hook killings that it not only boggles the mind but inspires anger and legitimate outrage. Even Lieutenant Paul Vance, head of the Connecticut State Troopers, admits that much information surrounding the crime is being withheld. But there also some issues that we need to keep the cards close to the chest. And what about the first responders? Why were they not allowed to enter the school until DAYS after the murders?
Why not those with an opposing view? Was that helpful for you all? My daughter Natalie was interested in asking him if he could pass some kind of legislation so that the only people that had guns were military personnel and law enforcement. And if people needed guns for sport that they could go to a range and the guns would have to stay there. Banning guns is NOT the answer. Americans have abandoned Christ and their accountability before God. Instead, more and more questions keep piling up. No rifle, we are told, was in his possession at the scene of the crime.

One can find almost anything on the Web that one can find offline in the “real” world. American Indian peoples live in the real world, and Web sites by and about Indian peoples live on the Web. Just as Indians are sometimes treated fairly in the real world, the Web contains sites that show Indians in respectful ways with accurate information, quality products to sell, and as whole human beings with real lives.
Just as Indian peoples are sometimes treated wrongly in the real world, the Web also contains sites that use inaccurate and damaging “information”, and portray Native peoples as either less or more than human, or as products to be exploited and sold in some fashion especially Native spirituality. The purpose of this Web page is to provide some guidelines useful for evaluating and identifying Web sites that contain accurate information and that are not exploitative of American Indians.
Note that these guidelines are not all inclusive nor are they foolproof.

He had an eye for the ladies, did Colonel Buck, and he would chase them ’til he got what he wanted. Then he would drop them like a hot brick I shuddered when I heard the name of the street. I did not want to go anywhere near that area, especially at midnight. But I drove a Yellow Cab, and it was my job to pick up a call when it came. So I swallowed and headed toward Bramlett Road and the slaughter yards. They were driving home in a carriage, and were somewhere near Spiegletown when the light failed and they knew they would have to seek shelter for the night The Flying Canoe Long ago, there were a number of lonely lumberjacks working in the center of a very large forest.
They cut down mammoth trees and watched them crash into the thick snow in exactly the place where they said the trees would land.

History[ edit ] One of the first tribes to encounter European colonists, the Pennacook were decimated by infectious diseases unwittingly carried by the newcomers. Suffering high mortality, they were in a weakened state and subject to raids by Mohawk of the Iroquois Confederacy from the west, and Micmac tribes from the north, who also took a toll of lives.
Chief Passaconaway had a military advantage over the New England colonists, but he decided to make peace with them rather than lose more of his people’s lives through warfare. They were caught up in King Philip’s War , however, and lost more members. Although Wonalancet , the chief who succeeded Passaconaway, tried to maintain neutrality in the war, bands in western Massachusetts did not.
The Pennacook fled north with their former enemies, or west with other tribes, where the English colonists hunted them down and killed them. Those who fled northward eventually merged with other displaced New England tribes and Abenaki.

The White Squaw This web site is attempting to list some of the best movies ever made about American Indians in the pre-assimilation era. The movies listed here focuses on Native Americans living in their traditional ways. I consider this era to be up to around the time of Wounded Knee in The biggest factor for me was how good the movie was. Others, like Dances with Wolves, will have a view that some may consider too idealistic.
Hopefully, all the movies included in this list will have some redeeming values in viewing native Americans, and the views prevalent towards them in the times the movies were made.

Transcript But the resistance, an offspring of history, continues. Through the years, details of such protests change — sometimes the foe is the U. Still, the broad strokes of each land infringement and each resistance stay essentially the same. In that tradition, the tribes gathered at Standing Rock today are trying to stop a natural gas pipeline operator from bulldozing what they say are sacred sites to construct an 1, mile oil pipeline. The tribes also want to protect the Missouri River, the primary water source for the Standing Rock Reservation, from a potential pipeline leak.
Energy Transfer Partners, which is building the pipeline, says on its website that it emphasizes safety and that, “in many instances we exceed government safety standards to ensure a long-term, safe and reliable pipeline. Environmentalists and activist groups like Black Lives Matter and Code Pink have also stepped in as allies. Many people who have visited say that the camp is beyond anything they’ve ever experienced.
I don’t think anything like this has ever happened in documented history,” said Ruth Hopkins, a reporter from Indian Country Today. Protesters have a standoff with police during a demonstration against the Dakota Access pipeline near the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in Mandan, N. In , when the Keystone XL pipeline was being debated, numerous Native American tribes and the Indigenous Environmental Network organized against it. The pipeline would have stretched 1, miles from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico.
