Most video games centered around action and compelled you forward through tension, and I was showing early stages of anxiety that would steer me away from games that relied on menacing or competitive forces.

There was something to organizing plants in grids, how everyone milled about the town doing their own thing, at the libraries Tuesday afternoons or a late night bar regular. Stardew Valley came at the right time for me. I only noticed this because of the many times my character would just pass out in public from exhaustion, still too new to Pelican Town and my farm to have a productive rhythm. I admit, I have a hard time making friends. This game is a sort of friendship wish fulfillment where you have computer characters that run like a mechanized dollhouse village, mostly reliable and you can bribe them with gifts for their love and attention.

Townspeople showed up when they were supposed to, filled you in on their mundane problems, had favorites and dislikes you could suss out from their acquaintances. Even better, everyone in the game is depressed about life in one way or another. Many feel stuck in small town life, others has silly trifles with one another, some have bad habits they wish they could break but always give into them.

Among other stuff, Reddit has discovered that the game will now punish you for romancing several characters at the same time. You can see as much in the image above, from the Reddit user Subarru. Ultimately, you get the option to marry your sweetheart of choice. The measure of how much a character likes you are hearts, which go up to ten.

And, until recently, you could romance all characters up to ten. You can still do that, but Stardew Valley will now basically punish you for dating around. Needless to say, this will make your life in Pelican Town way more difficult. This new event is a pretty interesting choice on the part of the developers. Stardew Valley has always gotten praise for being very representative.

That being the case, some people have been wondering why the game would punish you for having several partners.

The word alone is boring, how the hell could a game be fun? Yet, every day after school, I would come home to till and cultivate my crops, pet my dog, and try and woo my future wife by handing her gifts I hoped she liked. It was insanely addictive and I could not get enough. I was hooked on Harvest Moon. I still have the game, box, and instruction manual as well, all in pretty good condition.

It takes some time to build the relationship, but the good news is that once you are married, you can still increase your relationship with other characters, you can still visit Penny and you will always have your spouse help you around.

This was the first game I ever purchased on Steam, and have had zero regrets. Another two words is Freaking Awesome. This game lets you customize your character from the start with clothing and accesories and hair and gender and color of hair pants and eyes. Then later on you can get hats.

There is a pretty good combat system with a few different types of weapons from ranged to clubs to swords to daggers. The combat is pretty easy at first but later on gets really hard to where you have to bring stacks of food to not lose all of your health and pass out. I love the stories with the characters and a lot of them are really endearing or really sad at times. The information that I just gave is just the tip of the iceberg with this game and there is so much to discover and do.

Which is why this game is easily one of my top ten games that I’ve ever played.

This lack of pressure combined with the abundance of things your farmer can get up to are what make the gameplay cycle of Stardew Valley so perfect. I just need one more Iridium ore to upgrade my pickaxe. But one of the things your grandpa specifically told you to be doing is really connecting with other people, and the other villagers are where Stardew Valley truly shines.

However as you get to know these characters, remarkably real and human stories begin to unfold. Characters dealing with everything from addictions to lack of purpose to simply feeling stuck bring a sense of welcome weight to the otherwise idyllic Pelican Town. Unfortunately, Stardew Valley is not without its faults on the console version. These run the gamut of mildly annoying to downright unforgivable.

In the former, there are nuisances like the question of why the hell a console game uses a cursor for inventory management. These technical issues are truly unfortunate damages on an otherwise lovely and damn near perfect experience. I simply have never played a game as aggressively pleasant, nor have I ever felt such a draw to keep playing. Though the technical issues are always a concern, I truly enjoy every single moment I have with Stardew Valley.
